Stats Of Online Pro Poker Players
There are pro poker players out there making a living playing online multi table tournaments (MTT). Poker tournament results are public information. So, we can look at these players results and see statistically how the do it.
The first statistic that sticks out is how many tournaments many of these top players play. Here is an example that isn’t that unusual for a top player.
In one poker room alone, in one year our player played in over 2,200 tournaments. His average buy in was $175. With a 52% return on investment (ROI), he made over $200,000!
One benefit by playing such a high volume is that your good and bad luck evens out faster. If you play through a 30 tournament losing streak in three days, it is much less frustrating than doing it in fifteen or twenty days. The swing is the same but it seems shorter because a good result comes sooner.
Playing multiple tables is very common for highly skilled online players. One of the main reasons this is done is it can drastically increase your hourly rate of return. Another good reason to play multiple tables is to keep boredom from creeping into your play.
The top internet players make it to the money in about 15% of the time. This stat can vary from player to player, but is amazingly standard. To get a feel for how tough psychologically MTTs can be. The best online players cash on average 15 times for every 100 tournaments they play in, a sobering thought.
They make more deep runs. They are willing to take chances to get a big stack that they can use to win a tournament. They know that this is essential in making profits in MTTs.
Until you have a lot of results, it’s hard to know how good you are. The swings are big in MTT play, especially when you play in big fields. A big win, or ban run, will distort your results.
When you have a lot of tournaments, a thousand (or more) maybe, you can start to trust the numbers. Then you have a good idea of what you can expect. You can to some accuracy predict what your income can be, if things stay the same.
The stats tell us that most top tournament players play a lot of tournaments. The exception might be an occasional high stakes player. And, in spite of such a high volume of play, they keep a decent ROI of at least 50%.
If you think your game is good enough, give it a try. If you’re serious, read up on bankroll requirements for MTTs. Many players are good enough to win, but lose money due to bad money management.
